An impression of black currants, red berries and vanilla, which open into mint, cedar and sweet brown spices like nutmeg and allspice. Flavors that are big and explosive, but also balanced, with a finish that goes on forever.

Wine Enthusiast

A dazzling wine. Bursts with black-currant, plum, blackberry, tobacco, and olivaceous notes, and fine, toasty oak. Superb concentration; the fruit is simply fabulous, and so are the luscious, warm, silky tannins. Epitomizes class and elegance.

Score: 95. —Steve Heimoff, July 01, 2000.

Wine Advocate

The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is a full-bodied, explosively rich, deep purple-colored wine bursting with ripe fruit. It displays smoky oak, gobs of cassis, a touch of cigar box and cedar, and a layered, multi-dimensional feel. This voluptuous, seductive offering is already drinking well, yet should age effortlessly for 15-20 years.

Score: 93. —Robert Parker, December 1998.

International Wine Cellar

Deep ruby. Wild aromas of cassis, blackberry, meat, coffee and menthol. Sweet, plush and showy; impressive mouthfilling intensity of flavor. Finishes very long and chocolatey, with ripe tannins. Strong juice. 92 points

Score: 92. —Stephen Tanzer, May 1999.

Wine Spectator

A tightly wound wine from a classic vintage, with a firm band of cedar and spice wrapped around a core of ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry. It fans out to reveal hints of olive and smoke, firming on the finish. Best from 2002 through 2011. 15,000 cases made.

Score: 92. —James Laube, April 30, 2000.
