Wine Spectator

An extraordinary wine, dense, rich and earthy, with broad, plush tannins and tiers of complex currant, earth, cedar, black cherry, mineral and anise flavors. Keeps a tight focus on the long, rich, detailed aftertaste. Best from 2002 through 2010. 17,000 cases made. –JL Score: 95 Release Price: $100 Current Auction Price: $73 Country: California Region: Napa Special Designation: Cellar Selection Issue: Oct 31, 2000 Top 100 Wine Year: 2000 Rank: 34

Score: 95. —James Laube, October 31, 2000.

Wine Enthusiast

A profoundly deep nose of red and black fruit, with cedar, ginger and nutmeg. The sense of balance and grace is sublime, as layers of cassis, plum and cinnamon keep unfolding. The chewy finish is lengthy and elegant, and it should be held for no less than five years. This bottling honors its pedigree as California’s first classic Cabernet.

Score: 94. November 01, 2000.

Wine Advocate

A strong effort from Beaulieu, the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a beautifully sweet nose of spicy oak intermixed with black cherries and currants. Full-bodied, rich, pure, and concentrated, it combines restraint and elegance with power and muscle. It will age well for two decades. While Beaulieu is no longer one of California's cutting edge wineries, this is classic stuff. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2020.

Score: 90. —Robert Parker, December 2002.
