This wine is showing the typical evolution of the great wines of the appellation. The colour is still a deep purple, the nose reveals layers of dark fruits backed up by spices and hint of truffles. In the mouth the wine literally coats the palate with fruit, the finish is long and unctuous sustained by the abundant ripe tannins.

Actual bottle from our inventory is pictured. These bottles are in excellent condition, from their original case and all fills are into the neck. All bottles are as good or better than the bottle pictured.

Wine Spectator

One of the riper, more exotic wines of the vintage, this gushes with black currant, fig and blackberry fruit, all of which has melded together and is starting to show a corrupt edge, while the sweet bacon, spice, mesquite and clove-studded blood orange notes fill out the background. The long, very juicy finish is multilayered and supported by fresh acidity.--1998 Châteauneuf-du-Pape retrospective. Drink now through 2027. 6,250 cases made.

Score: 96. —James Molesworth, September 30, 2007.

Wine Advocate

The 1998 Cuvee Reservee requires another 2-3 years of cellaring. It is an old style, full-bodied effort revealing notes of roasted meats, beef blood, herbes de Provence, kirsch liqueur, sandalwood, and spice. Rich, full-bodied, moderately tannic, super-pure and dense, this gorgeous offering is the finest Cuvee Reservee produced since 1990.

Score: 94. —Robert Parker, December 2001.

International Wine Cellar

Saturated ruby. Liqueur-like kirsch and framboise aromas; superripe but not pruney. Very rich, deep flavors of sweet red fruits; still a bit youthfully aggressive but boasts terrific buffering volume. The strong but fine tannins reach the entire mouth. Has 2.4 grams per liter of residual sugar but does not come across as sugary, just ripe in a major way. 92(+?) points

Score: 92. —Stephen Tanzer, January 2001.
