Martin Prieur describes his young 2005 as combining the density and fleshiness of 1990, the finesse and purity of fresh fruit of 2002, and the color intensity of 2003. Almost the perfection of pinot noir. Food Match: white meats, veal, turkey, salmon, roasts, pork, pheasant, fowl, duck, chicken.

Actual bottle from our inventory is pictured. These bottles are in excellent condition, from their original case and all fills are into the neck. All bottles are as good or better than the bottle pictured.

International Wine Cellar

Saturated, bright ruby. Musky aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate and earth. Sweet, fat and full, with enticing flavors of black raspberry and violet. This is solid but with plenty of early personality. Finishes with lovely length and vinosity, the tannins substantial but arriving late. 90-93 points.

Score: 93. —Stephen Tanzer, March 2007.

Burghound

This is the first wine to display any real wood influence though it's deft and serves as a backdrop against the elegant and airy red raspberry and cherry aromas that dissolve seamlessly into the fresh and racy middle weight flavors that possess a wonderfully attractive underlying tension on the detailed and minerally finish. This is really quite fine for Champans with more finesse and refinement than usual but make no mistake, it's built to last. Outstanding! 90-93 points.

Score: 93. —Allen Meadows, April 01, 2007.

Wine Advocate

The 2005 Volnay Champans (my sample drawn on the eve of its racking and assemblage) offers what seems by now like the Prieur trademark, namely abundant bright black raspberry fruit. Clear and juicy, with a wonderful transparency to its deep mineral and fungal shadings and an incipiently creamy textural allure, this finishes with outstanding length, brown spices and black pepper joining the sauteed mushrooms and sweet raspberry fruit.

Score: 91-92. —David Schildknecht, June 2007.
