Domaine Zind Humbrecht Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Pinot Gris 1995
Rangen is by far our most difficult vineyard to work. Grass is not always an option, as the Rangen is made of a very poor volcanic sedimentary soil – big, broken chunks of dark heavy angular rocks – that can be very dry in summer, not allowing any competition to the vines. What is exceptional here is that this rock does break down eventually and manages to produce some very small amount of high mineral content clay that gets trapped in the deeper cracks of the soil. Of course, the roots of the vines can only get there after many years of struggle, but once there; they are growing very well and become stress resistant.
Actual bottle from our inventory is pictured. These bottles are in excellent condition, from their original case and all fills are into the neck. All bottles are as good or better than the bottle pictured.

Wine Advocate
I tasted six dry Tokay-Pinot Gris offerings from Zind-Humbrecht and one Vendange Tardive. As the enthusiastic notes that follow reveal, it is a toss up as to whether Riesling or Pinot Gris was the more successful varietal in 1995. No tasting note given.
The Zind-Humbrecht 1995s possess approximately 10% higher acidity than the crisp, high acid 1994s, largely because September was a very cool month. There was no need to chaptalize any of the ZH wines, and extremely long fermentations resulted in high alcohol.

Wine Spectator
An effusive white, full of ripe mango and passion fruit flavors, yet it's dry and spicy on the palate, with a firm structure. Displays lovely balance and harmony, suggesting it will improve through 2000.

Screw Cap
Wines sealed with a screw cap as opposed to a cork, which experts report protects and preserves wine more effectively than does a cork, while also eliminating the possibility of cork taint.
No Sulfites
All wines naturally contain some sulfites, however wines that contain less than 10 parts per million sulfites are not required to include "Contains Sulfites" on their labels.
