Magrez Fombrauge is located in the commune of St. Emilion. More specifically, the 1.5 hectare vineyard is located on the Cote de Saint-Emilion facing due south. The soil is largely chalk on limestone bedrock. The vineyard consists of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with an average age of almost 30 years.

Wine making at Fombrauge dates back to the 15th century. But the wines made back then, share almost no resemblance to the wines produced by Bernard Magrez today. Magrez purchased the estate in 1999 and with the help of Michel Rolland, this property has the desire and the willingness to spare no expense in their pursuit of making wines at the highest potential quality the terroir will allow. Production is only about 420 cases per year.

Actual bottle from our inventory is pictured. These bottles are in excellent condition, from their original wooden case and all fills are into the neck. All bottles are as good or better than the bottle pictured. Wine Advocate

This is sheer nectar of the vine from proprietor Bernard Magrez's Chateau Fombrauge. One of the vintage's superstars, this prodigious effort continues to put on weight and richness. From the bottle, it may be even more impressive than it was from cask. An unctuously-textured blockbuster, with a wealth of fruit, and a sumptuous bouquet of spring flowers, espresso, blackberry liqueur, minerals, and toasty oak, it is full-bodied and seamless with extraordinary intensity, purity, and symmetry. It is rare to find a wine this fat and concentrated, particularly from Bordeaux. As it sat in the glass, an intense note of graphite emerged, but the oak (it was aged and went through malolactic in 100% new oak) has nearly disappeared! Where did it go? Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.

Score: 98. —Robert Parker, April 2003.

Wine Spectator

Pretty, modern red. Lovely aromas of crushed fruit, coffee and cream. Full-bodied, with lots of new oak but it's silky, tasty and fruity. Silly price. Best after 2007. 500 cases made.

Score: 91. —James Suckling, March 31, 2003.
