Castelgiocondo is produced from an uncompromising selection of the finest Sangiovese grapes, in a vineyard whose ideal elevation, well-drained soils, and southwest-facing exposure yield all of the qualities that converge to produce the finest expression of this ancient grape variety. It is an elegant, well-balanced wine of magnificent structure. At the estate of Castelgiocondo the freeze struck in a hit and miss style in the lower zones. The higher zones noted for the rocky porous soils where the grapes destined to become great wines are grown, did not suffered the effects of the freeze.

Wine Spectator

Dark ruby-garnet. Decadent aromas of blackberry, mushroom and grilled meat. Hints of dried candied fruit. Full and supersilky, with seductive, opulent fruit character. It's so long and caressing. A thoroughly gorgeous bottle.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Drink now through 2017.

Score: 96. —James Suckling, 2007.

International Wine Cellar

Opaque ruby with dark garnet hues. Intense aromas of incense, nutmeg and cinnamon lead to flavors of blackberry, chocolate, espresso and vanilla. Densely structured, with palate-coating gauzy tannins and a decidedly mineral edge to the finish. Though it lacks the excitement of the best wines of the vintage, this is a fine offering from Frescobaldi Montalcino estate.

Score: 91. —Edward Beltrami, July 2002.
